[I'm feeling: | bouncy]
[I'm listening to: |The Jam, In the City]

Right, so I now have absolutely no money left in my bank account. I didn't have a great deal to start with, but I spent the last of it on a CD (The Best of The Jam! Whoot!) and a book (Stephen Fry), so yeah, no money left. Damn you amazon. Although it has to be said, I've probably spend more on postage and packaging than I have on the actual books, mostly due to me being a cheapskate who always goes for the cheap second hand option. Still, I should probably do some work on that website, then I can actually get paid for it.

I watched The Hole on Sunday night. Really not the best movie ever made, but there was something about it that really, really creeped me out. I think the whole concept of being trapped like that really got to me. Anyway.

Alias finale. Blah.
(My icon? Has never felt more appropriate than it does right now)

And it started so well... )

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, Without a Trace tonight was, once again, fantastic. (Which, after Alias, was nice.) It was so sad. And they used Jeff Buckley over the final scene... ha. Seems quite a popular song to use lately. And when it ended, the announcer person said that it'd be back in the summer. Could we possibly be seeing a case of Channel 4 treating a good show like they should? I'll believe it when I see it. I mean, we're still waiting for season four of The West Wing.

Not exactly going to be looking to channel 4 for cheery revision breaks this week though. Tommorow, there's Death in Gaza, which looks really sad, and then on Thursday there's Omagh, which looks really, really sad. I hate sad things, but I'm still planning on watching them both. Meh.

On gay marriage [May. 21st, 2004|04:49 pm]
I realised that, apart from saying I'm in favour of it, I've never really fully explained my feeling on gay marriage. And since now seemed like a good a time as any, here goes:

OK, so in the bible, it say that if you get divorced and marry someone else, then that's wrong. A marriage is a life time contract, if you marry somebody else then it's adultery.

But, according to our laws, if somebody gets married and then gets divorced, they're allowed to get married again. It's not even questioned. It's just the way it is. If, however, that person wants to get married in a church, then it becomes more complicated. The Church of England, as far as I can tell, will let you get married again, in a Church. The Catholic Church won't, not unless you have that handy get out clause, an annulment. It's not allowed. (Hell, most of the reason the Church of England came about was because Henry VIII want to get married again and the pope wouldn't let him have an annulment)

So here, we have a situation where the bible says something is wrong, yet the state still allows it to happen. Whether or not the church approves of this is left to individual denominations.

And honestly, I can't see why we don't just work off the same principle in terms of gay marriage. I know they're not totally comparable, but hopefully people get where I'm coming from. We should allow people to get married in the legal sense regardless of gender and sexuality. Marriage in the religious sense should be left up to individual religious denominations. The catholic church is probably never going to accept that marriage should be between anything but one man and one woman. Some of the more liberal Christian Churches out there will probably be perfectly happy to accept them.

Also, why do people get so hung up about the word marriage? Loads of people get married without it having anything to do with religion, and a lot of them probably don't even believe in God. Unless we're going to make them start calling their marriage a civil union too, gay people should be allowed to call it whatever they like.

[I'm feeling: | tired]

A semi-productive day today. I watched Murphy's Law on the BBC. Am I the only teenage girl on the planet that has a thing for James Nesbit? I know he's kind of old (and a bit of a cheating rat by all accounts), but... I don't know. Maybe it's because he's Irish?

Without a Trace tonight blew me away. This seems to be becoming a recurring theme, no? That show is just so damn good. Apparently from next week they're going to be showing it in a double bill. This would normally be a good thing, except that having 3 hours of television, out of the about 5 worth watching in a week, all on one night, is going to play havoc with my revision plans. (On that note I managed nearly four hours on Alexander II tonight. Didn't quite get on to the politics though. I also finished most of one of my way overdue media essays, so yay)

But anyway. Without a Trace: Victory for Humanity )

Anyway, tommorow Channel 4 is showing Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, followed by an interview with Nick Broomfield. I'd probably watch it anyway, but I'm extra grateful to channel 4 for showing it because Nick Broomfield also directed Kurt and Courtney, which is the focus film for our documentary module in film studies. He comes across as a bit of a sleazy character to be honest, but he doesn't seem afraid to get involved in the action in his films. The scene of him verbally assaulting Courtney Love at an ACLU dinner and getting dragged off stage is an absolute classic. But yes, I'm looking forward to that.

I should so not be up at this time on a college night.

Q and A on the proposed EU constitution.

All you euro-sceptics now have to tell me why exactly this is such a truly terrible idea. And no, you can't use the excuse of the Tory MP on Question Time last week, who said that Europe can't have a Constitution because it isn't a country. *rolls eyes*

Now. I'm going to bed.

[I'm feeling: | aggravated]

OK, so is there any reason why somebody who has previously friended you and defriended you for no apparent reason, would friend and defriend you all over again? I know people say you shouldn't take it personally, but I do, that's just the way I am. And when they disliked you enough to defriend you the first time, why friend you all over again, only to take you off their friends list a few days later, without even posting a comment or an entry in between?

Oh, and while we're on this subject, why do people always say "I've defriended some people because it's obvious they don't read my journal"? Unless they've told you that they don't, how is it obvious? If you're going off the fact that they never comment, then you might well be wrong- I don't comment regularly on the vast majority of the journals on my friends list, and there's quite a few where I've never commented at all. But that doesn't mean that I don't read them and that I'm not interested. I just don't feel the need to comment ever single time. So don't make assumptions, OK?

Also? Don't date people that you're friends with. Ever. It will only lead to badness. Take it from one who knows.

[I'm feeling: | discontent]

Alias seems to leave me with a nasty taste in my mouth these days.

Sydney and Vaughn need to stop being mopey and depressing, Barnett needs to buy a dress that actually fits her, and Lauren and Sark both need to realise that they do not sound the slightest bit British so please stop pretending because it's driving me mad!

Meh. This show actually used to be good.

What the fuck?.

Seriously. I almost can't believe I just read that.

Still. Anybody who says "I'd pick Margaret Thatcher to run Great Britain over Tony Blair any day" is obviously full of shit.

[I'm listening to: |Bob Dylan]

London trip was OK. I might have enjoyed it a bit more if I was in better company. I might write more about it later if I can be bothered.

I'm going bowling again tonight... hopefully I won't lose every single game again.

Blah.

[I'm feeling: | amused]

So, when a guy tells you that you're exactly like Hermione, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Anyway, more questions, this time from [info]vilandra25

1. If you could make everyone in the world watch one film, what would it be and why?
Hmmm. That's a hard one actually. Maybe Love Actually, because it just leaves you with such a warm fuzzy feeling inside... and sometimes people just need to mellow about a bit.

2. If money were no object, where in the world would you live?
Um, probably London. One of the coolest cities in the world, and not too far from Manchester (which I love)

3. Who is your least favorite band/musician?
Britney Spears by a mile. I also have an intense dislike of almost all nu metal or rap artists. There's a couple I don't mind, but most of them just aren't my thing.

4. If you couldn't study politics, what would you study?
I very nearly applied for Theology, because it's something I've become very interested in lately, especially comparative religions. Then I was going to apply for joint honors Politics/Theology, but I couldn't find enough Unis that I liked that offered them both. So I just went for single honors politics in the end, but I'm still hoping to take some religion/theology modules

5. What political "cause" do you feel most strongly about, and why?
Equal rights for women, gay people, ethnic minorities etc. A lot of the stuff we've been learning about in media studies lately has really re-enforced this. It's just very frustrating too see how some people are treated in society.

I'm also becoming very interested lately in the Third World, and the way that the rich countries treat them. We're setting up a Make Trade Fair shop at college, and it's really sparked my interest.
